Blockbuster film spawns new language phenomenon

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Though James Cameron fell short of the “Best Picture” Oscar with his blockbuster film, Avatar, he raked in the dough at the box office; grossing more than 2 billion dollars in sales, the highest ever. The buzz about the film revolved around the amazing 3D (and even 4D) effects, reflecting a breakthrough in cinematic technology. But perhaps the most unusual buzz came when the language spoken by the film’s extraterrestrial beings, Na’vi, became an instant sensation, sweeping the the web.

Just 24 hours after the premiere of Avatar, the website Language Log, hosted a Q&A with the Na’vi language’s creator Paul Frommer; and the phenomenon of Na’vi took off. People became obsessed with the newly created tongue and wanted to speak it themselves. There are countless followers who claim to be fluent in Na’vi.

The creation of the language began back in 2005, four years before the film would reach theaters. Unlike other languages babbled by aliens in other films, Na’vi actually has a system. So much so that words and sentences not even spoken in the film can be formed using the system (once you figure that system out, of course). No dictionary has been written yet, but Frommer says he is thrilled to see people so enthralled with his language and he is impressed with their progress.

A lengthy statement was posted on the Language Log website by a user who figured out the system…

“Ngaru ätxäle … oel set futa Hal’liwutta tsayeyktanru ngal peng futa lì’fyati Na’viyä nume nereeiu a ngeyä wotxa lì’utìtäftxurenu sì aylì’uyä sänumeti perängey ayoel. Ayoel nereu a tsa’u ke tsayängun lu txo ayoel pänutìng futa rawketi sayi nìwotx ulte Eywafa ke txayey. Kawkrr!!”

Or, in English:

“I now ask you to tell the Hollywood bosses [Hal'liwutta tsayeyktanru] that those of us who want to learn the Na’vi language are waiting (impatiently) for your full grammar and lexicon. We promise to raise a lotta hell if what we want is not forthcoming, and ‘by Eywa’ we wont stop. Ever!!”

olsen-twins

The cute little Olsen twins joined the club of actors-turned-designers with the creation of a clothing collection featured in Wal-mart stores. They followed, with slightly higher end merchandise, with  The Row and then Elizabeth & James. Now, the pair have done it again with the unveiling of a new clothing line this Spring. Mary Kate and Ashley will design high fashion street clothes at affordable prices for the juniors collection at JCPenney chain stores.

Olsenboye is inspired by America’s favorite cities. This Spring, the focus is on New York City. Each season will showcase the trends of a new city.

Blindsided

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

sandy

Just days after accepting the Oscar for her movie, The Blindside, Sandra Bullock was blindsided herself. Maybe biker Jesse James has inhaled too many exhaust fumes, or maybe he is just plain stupid. If married to Sandra Bullock, only an idiot would even look at another woman. Let alone a former Amish gal (that’s right…Amish) currently a mother of two and covered in tattoos.

Michelle McGee, a stripper in San Diego, says she carried on an 11-month affair with the Oscar winner’s hubby- and that he says his marriage was a sham and  “just for publicity.”

“I would never have hooked up with him if I thought he was a married man,” McGee told In Touch Weekly. “He gave me the impression they were separated.”

She said she met James at his motorcycle shop in Long Beach, while Sandra was filming The Blind Side.

“We ended up on the couch,” she said. “He wanted to watch movies, but I asked him, ‘What’s going on with you and Sandra?’”

“‘She doesn’t live here. She has a house in Austin. She is filming, and I can’t talk about it,’” James reportedly told her.

They had sex “two or three times” in his office that night, she said, and have been sleeping together for nearly a year.

People.com reported that Sandy moved out of the couple’s Southern California home just before the affair became public. This isn’t Jesse James’ first ride on the failed marriage train, he has been married twice before-including a two-year stint with a porn star, with whom he has a daughter. Sham or not, America’s sweetheart was doing the rough rider a favor by exchanging vows. Let him have the tattooed stripper…maybe a much better match for the bad boy.

Lindsay crying over spilt milk

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

It is probably my most favorite commercial on the tube these days…it’s an E-Trade advertisement featuring talking babies. It is one of a series of advertisements starring some oh-so-cute tots and it is now the center of a lawsuit, thanks to Queen Lindsay.

Lindsay Lohan is suing the financial corporation, insisting that one of the babies — who happens to be named Lindsay — was modeled after her. The baby is referred to as a milk-a-holic (hilarious). Wonder what would give her the idea that the baby was modeled after her? The ad shows a baby boy apologizing to his girlfriend via webcam for not calling the night before. The baby girl(friend) asks, “So that milk-a-holic Lindsay wasn’t over?”

She wants $100 million for her pain and suffering. Lohan’s lawyer, Stephanie Ovadia, said the actress has the same single-name recognition as Oprah or Madonna. What? Are you kidding Lindsay? First of all, there are millions of Lindsays in the world. How many Oprahs or Madonnas do you know? Secondly, don’t flatter yourself, your name shouldn’t even be in the same sentence with showbiz icons.

Grow up…you are such a baby.

Ooooh Zoe!

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Alright, so the Academy had their little shin-dig last night, inviting hundreds of Hollywood hotties to strut their stuff. And by now, you’ve seen all the best (and worst) dressed lists. You’ve viewed the perfectly posed pics on the crimson carpet and you probably noticed that it was…boring.

The stars played it safe. Perhaps they have wised up, and realized that seeing their faces splashed across magazine covers with cruel comments may not be the confidence booster they need. Nevertheless, it makes for a pretty ho-hum morning after. Mediocrity aside, there were a few that pushed the envelope.

Zoe Saldana’s snowcone-esque gown by Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy) is getting mixed reviews. The stunning, “Natalia” gown was plucked from his summer collection.  It is a strapless, chiffon, and shadow-dyed in various hues of purple. From a pale lilac bodice covered in crystals down to the bouffant hemline in a deep violet, this gown is being hailed as the best of the night by some, a red-carpet tragedy by others. Either way, you gotta hand it to her for courage. On a night when most stars blend into the background, the blue alien from “Avatar” shone bright.

The new Alice opens up a fashion wonderland

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

alice

The Lexington Avenue windows of Bloomingdale’s in Manhattan are looking a lot like a storybook these days. In loo of the upcoming Tim Burton interpretation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, Spring fashions reflect the kooky style of the movie’s characters. The Red Queen, The White Rabbit and The Cheshire Cat, among others, are arranged in a tea party setting using actual props from the movie!

These fashions aren’t derived from the Alice you remember from your adolescence. Burton’s Alice is distinctly more mature, she is  edgy, adventurous and confident. That makes her the perfect muse for the unusual fashions of jeweller Tom Binns, Swarovski, Bloomingdale’s and makeup brand Urban Decay.

Swarovski has created replicas of the sparrow pendant worn by Mia Wasikowska, who plays Alice. Urban Decay created an eye shadow palette and displayed it in a box made to replicate a gold-spined book, complete with a keyhole latch. Cocktail dresses by Sue Wong mimic the tattered, edgy style of Alice and appeal to teens and misses alike.

“The whole package for each character, with its other-worldly hair, makeup and design combo almost echoes the mood of current popular culture,” says Avril Graham, executive fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar. Graham also says it’s Burton’s explosion of color, texture and dramatic costumes that has people talking, she even compares the style with pop culture’s fascination with Lady Gaga.

You can get lost in Tim Burton’s wonderland tomorrow, when Alice in Wonderland opens in theaters across the country.

Single-shoulder Trendsetter

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

The 67th annual Golden Globes produced some trendsetters and some trend-forgetters. A common thread among designs that wowed is the one-shoulder silhouette. Those who did it best include Marion Cotillard in an emerald Christian Dior, Jennifer Aniston in a casual Valentino gown, Jane Krakowski in a plum gorgeous J. Mendel and Amy Poehler in a striking red Jay Godfrey.

One-shoulder gowns that got the cold shoulder from fashion critics include Drew Barrymore, whose nude Atelier Versace dress got flack for the “bulge” at the right hip. It does, in fact, look like she is growing barnacles. Other one-shoulder looks we’d like to forget include Anna Kendrick in Marchesa and Sigourney Weaver in a not-so-flattering Herve L. Leroux.

Penelope Cruz definitely stole the red-carpet show in her off-the-shoulder Armani gown. The beautiful lace and tiered ruffle hem are only the icing on the curvacious Cruz cake.

Sexiest Vampire Alive still can’t get a date

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

robert-pattinson

Actually, Robert Pattinson has been deemed Sexiest Man Alive. People Magazine’s annual issue has chosen Twilight, New Moon’s teen vampire as 2009’s sexiest guy. Robert is actually 23 years old and claims “I still can’t get a date.”

Maybe he should bathe. Sources from his movie sets claim Robert’s hygiene is terrible and that gorgeous messy hair? Dirty, oily and likely weeks without a wash! So, swoon on teenie-boppers…his smell is surely overpowered by his bite.

Other hotties joining Robert on 2009’s list include John Legend, Adam Lambert, Jerry O’Connell, Bradley Cooper, David Beckham and the guys from Glee.
