Prom
What is prom all about? |
What is prom? For most teens, prom is regarded as one of the highlights of the school year. It marks the end and gives students an opportunity to get dressed up for a special night of dining and dancing!
The tradition of promenade ball, or prom for short, began in the late 19th century to celebrate the end of a school year and was commonly called a graduation ball. Countries all over the world hold similar events with different names. The United Kingdom, for example, understands the word prom to refer to a season of classical concerts held between July and September. Canada uses the terms grad or formal to describe the end of year event and is usually only open to those in their graduating year of high school.
Some high schools hold three proms; an eighth grade prom, a junior prom and a senior prom. Some smaller schools allow the entire student body to attend, while most only hold the event for seniors, juniors and their guests.
What to wear? For teenage girls, choosing a wardrobe for the special night is often more fun and exciting than the actual dance! Girls will plan months in advance. Whether it’s surfing the internet for a specific style or traipsing from boutique to boutique, finding a dress that is not only figure-flattering, but also fashionable, is a strenuous duty!
Once the perfect gown is found, next on the list are accessories. Jewelry, shoes and a purse help to complete the look. During the planning stages, girls flip through magazines—cutting out the latest make-up products or ear-marking favorite hairstyles.
Outfitting the date is the next step. Guys have it a little easier. While there are tons of brand name tuxedos offering different styles in an array of accessory color options, there is one basic look for them: coat, pant, dress shirt, tie and vest or cummerbund. While the dates usually try and coordinate their attire with the girl’s, it is not essential for them to match exactly. The tradition of the corsage and boutonniere is still going strong. Both are typically purchased by the male and both flowers should match, tying the couple’s individual looks together.
The actual event! Some attendees opt to pool their money and rent a limousine for the evening. Arriving in style at the event is crucial! Most prom-goers make reservations at a fancy restaurant and go eat in groups before hand; only cake is served at the dance itself. Other schools may provide full meals at the prom—depending on the prom budget, of course!
Along with dancing and cake eating, there are other prom happenings; such as crowning a prom king and queen. The winners of the royal titles are typically voted on by the entire student body and announced toward the end of the event.
Since the late 19th century, teens have anticipated prom night all year long. They look forward to the dressing, the dining and the dancing. So, what is prom? Prom is a formal dance that gives students a chance to celebrate the end of another school year. |
