A Quinceanera is a traditional latin american event thrown on a young ladies 15th birthday to recognize that she has entered adulthood. A Quinceanera is also referred to as a "coming out party." As part of the celebration, a mariachi band plays to honor her on the night before she turns 15. The Quinceanera festival is normally held on the next Saturday in a large church and is similar to a general church wedding. The birthday girl is elaborately dressed, usually in a fancy white or light pink colored gown. When entering the church, the quinceanera is accompanied by her parents. After the event has ended, the Quinceanera takes her bouquet to the alter then all attending guests proceed to participate in a celebration dinner and reception with music and dancing. Following the meal, the Quinceanera has the first dance with her father. The dance floor is then opened to anyone including men who alternate dancing with the birthday girl. A crowning ceremony occurs during the reception, and a tiara is placed where a head piece had previously been worn. Guests continue to congratulate her on on passing into womanhood while the birthday cake is cut and enjoyed.
